Once through security, the South's departure lounge covers the full spread. Sit-down meals come from wagamama, PizzaExpress (running its usual menu plus a breakfast list in the mornings), Wondertree, a world-food restaurant with Fairtrade coffee and independent wines, and Nando's, the airport's only one, serving eat-in and collect. The faster tier is strong here: itsu's Asian-inspired counters with plenty under £8, Joe & The Juice for smoothies and sandwiches, a Pret a Manger, and GAIL's, new for 2026, doing proper bakery coffee and pastries that beat a chain espresso by some distance.

That list, plus the three bars covered below, makes South the terminal where the food choice rarely disappoints, and prices sit closer to the high street than airport folklore suggests, though menus move too often to print. The pub is the Flying Horse, the South's Wetherspoon, airside and open from about 03:00 until the evening departures thin out. It does exactly what the chain does everywhere: familiar menu, low prices by airport standards, and a full English at an hour most kitchens would call night. Its opposite number at the other terminal is the Red Lion, so a Wetherspoon breakfast is available whichever side of the airport your flight leaves from.

The other two doors are more particular. Big Smoke is the Surrey brewer's taproom and kitchen, pouring its own fresh beers alongside cocktails and an all-day menu, open with the first wave and late into the schedule. The South Downs Bar leans local instead, built around small-batch producers, English wines and cocktails, open 04:00 to about 21:00. The standard caution applies at all three: an early pint is a Gatwick tradition, but gate staff can refuse boarding to anyone who has clearly overdone it, so keep the count sensible.

South is the terminal that never fully closes, because the railway station is part of the building and the terminal itself holds the airport's overnight crowd. Before security, The Beehive (its name a nod to Gatwick's original 1936 terminal building) serves food with a view over the arrivals hall, and Giraffe covers family-friendly world food; both run 04:00 to 23:00 and both work for anyone not flying, whether you are seeing someone off or waiting between trains. That 24-hour cluster is worth knowing for two specific situations. Landing on a delayed late flight, you can eat properly before the drive or the first train rather than raiding a vending machine. And on a pre-dawn start, or an overnight wait for a morning departure, there is hot food and coffee landside long before check-in opens.

Airside, the day starts at 03:00 with Big Smoke, the Flying Horse and Wondertree, and the rest of the floor is open by 04:00. Most venues close around 21:00, slightly later than the North's 20:30, and the same three early openers run on until the last departures, so a late flight still gets a pub, a taproom and a world-food kitchen. Treat exact minutes as seasonal and check the live directory on the day; the airport adjusts hours to the schedule, not the other way round.

The crunch is the early morning. South's short-haul banks load the departure lounge from roughly 04:30 to 08:00 in the holidays, and the sit-down floors fill fast once the security queue releases each wave. Wanting a cooked breakfast before an 07:00 flight is realistic, but order promptly; the counters (itsu, Pret, GAIL's) move much faster than table service when boarding is near. Mid-morning to early afternoon is the calm window, then the afternoon wave builds again.

The family kit matches the North's: kids' menus and highchairs at most venues, bottle warming on request, and power points and USB charging built into restaurant seating, so the pre-flight meal doubles as the devices' last charge. One quiet money note: guests at the Bloc hotel inside this terminal get standing discounts at South venues, currently 10% at Caffè Nero, 20% at PizzaExpress and a free drink with breakfast at wagamama, so if you are staying at the Bloc the night before, the terminal's restaurants are already discounted for you. Dietary coverage is chain-standard, with vegan and gluten-aware options flagged at wagamama, itsu and the bigger menus.

• Eat airside unless someone is with you who is not flying. The departure lounge holds the real choice; landside earns its keep for send-offs, station waits and the 24-hour cafes rather than the full menu.
• On an early flight, use the 03:00 trio or the counters. Big Smoke, the Flying Horse and Wondertree serve from the first wave, and itsu, GAIL's and Pret clear queues fastest when the morning banks crowd the floor.
• Flying late? Three doors stay open. Most of the lounge shuts around 21:00; Big Smoke, the Flying Horse and Wondertree run to the last departures, and The Beehive serves landside until 23:00.
• Landing late or overnighting? South feeds you at any hour. Greggs and Pret in arrivals, Caffè Nero and the M&S run around the clock, which is one reason the overnight crowd gathers on this side of the airport.
